Patients considering improvement of the eyelid area many times consider blepharoplasty operation. This involves
removing the skin and, at times, conservative amounts of adipose (fat tissue) from the upper and lower eyelid areas.
It is important to consider the minimal removal of tissues and support of tissues to obtain natural appearing results with
significant improvement. The majority of patients however undergo this procedure to improve the excess tissues and puffiness
in the eyelids.
This procedure is performed in the office operating suite under local (injections of numbing medication) and intravenous
sedation. This procedure takes from one to two hours and patients return home the same day. The sutures (stitches) are left
in place from three to five days. There may be bruising and swelling which slowly dissipates over one to two weeks.
This procedure is one of the more popular facial procedures since nice improvements can be obtained with minimal time for recovery
compared to other procedures. It is important to consider other aspects of the facial tissues when considering eyelid surgery
including the position of the brow and the position of the mid-face tissues. These areas do affect the appearance in the eyelids.
The procedures are performed using various techniques including laser to obtain the desired result for the individual patient.
Each of the cases must be individualized for the personal needs of the patient. Scaring from blepharoplasty type surgeries is
quite minimal due to the fact that eyelids heal with very fine and light scars.
